Research highlights in safety and security

This collection of highlights from VTT safety and security research bringsto light the vast diversity of the fi eld. In the past, safety and security wasall about protecting individuals from threats and dangers in their immedi-ate surroundings. Today, the concept has evolved to encompass entireliving environments and the whole of society. Safety and security needsare constantly changing – and the science of safety is evolving accord-ingly, from reactively studying why things go wrong to proactively learningwhat makes things go right. Globalisation has enabled the beneficial free movement of many things,but it has also brought new risks and dangers. Emerging technologies,and their potential for misuse, also present signifi cant new threats. Thesechanges have transformed the basic nature of safety and security, fromprotection and control of losses to holistic cultivation of operations andresilient facilities and structures. While technology alone cannot assuresafety or security, they are unattainable without its support. Many factorscontribute to creating and improving safety and security – including theirperception in the eye of the user.
